1. Fix any minor problems with your car. If your vehicle needs any major repairs you should consider selling the car as- is to a wholesaler/dealer if it is worth less than $10,000. The cost of repairs is often more than the car is worth to you or to a private-party buyer. 2. Get the car smog certified. If the car does not pass the smog test, you must fix it so that it does. In California you are required (before selling your vehicle) to smog any car 4 model years or older unless your automobile is: Your smog certification through DMV is good for 90 days after issue. 3. Download or pick up a “Bill Of Sale” form from the DMV. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg135.pdf Fill out all required information at time of sale with the buyer. 4. Download or pick up a “Transfer/Release Of Liability” form from the DMV. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg138.pdf Have the buyer fill this out at time of sale. DMV must receive this within 5 days of transfer. This releases you of all liability (once DMV does the transfer) for the following: 5. If you do not have a title request a duplicate copy from the DMV. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg227.pdf This can take some time as you must wait to receive it in the mail. 6. Clean your car. Thoroughly wash the interior and exterior. Consider shampooing the carpet. 7. Take Pictures. Take at least 2 pictures of both the interior and exterior. Take pictures of any damage. 8. Assess the value of your vehicle. Check sites such as Craigslist.com, Backpage.com, eBay.com etc. to get an idea of what similar cars are selling for in your area. Understand the final price at sale will usually be lower than the listing price. 9. Create another e-mail address. You can use this new e-mail for your ad and avoid getting spam in your personal email address. 10. Create an ad. Include all of the good things about your vehicle as well as the year, make and model. Also add the mileage, asking price, and any problems the car may have. Post pictures with it if possible. Be honest and truthful, you don’t want any future problems from an angry buyer. 11. Agree to meet potential buyers in a public place. Keep safety in mind, unfortunately the world is not a perfect place and you could become a victim of a scam or worse. 12. Only accept cash or cashier’s check. If you are not sure you can identify a fake check or counterfeit bills, bring the buyer to your bank and have them deposit the money directly into your account. 13. Do the paperwork at time of sale. a. Sign the pink slip (title) and give it to the buyer. b. Have the buyer fill out the “Transfer/Release Of Liability” form. Sign it. Send it to the DMV within 5 days. |
